This is the report on a background study for the National Spatial Strategy. The objective of the study was to examine the relevance of an Ecological Network approach to the conservation of biodiversity.

An ecological network is a network of sites whose constituents are:

• "Core areas" of high biodiversity value; and
• "Corridors" or "stepping-stones", which are linkages between them
