Waste Enforcement

The Office of Environmental Enforcement (OEE) has been heavily involved in dealing with unauthorised waste activities in Ireland since its establishment. As part of this work a study on unauthorised waste activities was commissioned and the Report on the Nature and Extent of Unauthorised Waste Activities was published in 2005.  This report included an action plan for dealing with the ongoing issues surrounding illegal waste activities.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in fulfilling some of its required actions under the action plan set up a confidential telephone service designed to encourage reporting of illegal dumping of waste or of abandoned illegal dumps.

As part of a campaign entitled ‘Dump the Dumpers’ members of the public can report illegal dumping via a 24 hour lo-call telephone number 1850 365 121. Local authorities, the gardaí and the EPA will follow up on the information provided by the public, as appropriate.

In addition to its work in relation to illegal waste activities, the EPA is also required to publish a register of registered waste collectors under the Waste Management (Collection Permit) Regulations and Amendment Regulations, 2001.  The information for this register is provided by ten lead authorities who issue collection permits on behalf of other neighbouring authorities.
