EPA prosecutes a Pig Farmer

On 7th of February 2017, the Environmental Protection Agency prosecuted a Pig Farmer at the Courthouse, Longford.

The licensee pleaded guilty to:

  • On the 12th of April 2016, failure to provide an appropriate reception pit with level alarm at the three over-ground slurry storage tanks.
  • From the 25th of February 2016 to the 15th of April 2016, failure to notify the Agency as soon as practicable after the occurrence of an incident with the potential for environmental contamination of surface water or groundwater, or posing an environmental threat to air or land or requiring an emergency response by the local authority.
  • From the 1st of April 2016 to the 17th of April 2016, failure to submit an Annual Environmental Report covering the previous calendar year.

On hearing details of the offences, Judge Hughes convicted the licensee on one charge and took the other charges into consideration. He imposed fines totalling €500 and the Agency costs were also awarded.
