EPA prosecutes a Pig Farmer


On 7th of February 2017 the Environmental Protection Agency prosecuted a Pig Farmer at the Courthouse, Longford.

The licensee pleaded guilty to: 

  • From the 11th of March 2016 to 22nd of March 2016, failure to notify the Agency as soon as practicable after the occurrence of an incident with the potential for environmental contamination of surface water or groundwater, or posing an environmental threat to air or land.
  • On 11th of March 2016, failure to provide a partial earthen bund to ensure sufficient protection of the clean water outfall in event of tank overflow, collapse or leakage.
  • From the 1st of April 2016 to the 12th of April 2016, failure to submit an Annual Environmental Report covering the previous calendar year, 2015.

On hearing details of the offences, Judge Hughes convicted the licensee on one charge and took the other charges into consideration. He imposed fines totalling €750 and the Agency costs were also awarded.
