Environmental Technologies Workshop

May 08, 2007

The EPA Environmental Technologies Research Programme

Since 2000, the EPA has been supporting research for environmental technologies, most notably through the Cleaner Greener Production Programme (CGPP). This programme focuses on the prevention and reduction of environmental impact arising from industrial activities and has been recognised nationally and internationally as a successful programme.

In 2005, the EPA issued a call for research proposals to provide funding towards research projects developing technologies to protect the environment. In 2006 & 2007 (to date), the EPA issued a call for Masters, Doctoral and Fellowship Schemes, all with Environmental Technologies research themes.

There has been considerable investment in research through the NDP with a strong focus on scientific, engineering and technical areas including emerging sectors such as biotechnology, nanotechnology and IT systems development. This national research capacity is well placed to provide solutions to address a range of environmental issues in support of sustainable development and to develop commercial opportunities for knowledge and products within Ireland and internationally.

It is therefore an objective for this workshop (alongside identifying research gaps etc), to further develop linkages between expert groups in third-level and research institutes and key stakeholders in government, industrial and financial sectors in order to develop and capitalise on environmental technologies.
