Climate Change Lecture, 6 February 2020

The EPA, in association with the National Dialogue on Climate Action, will host a public lecture addressing the new EU Commission's main objective of the European Green Deal, that the continent will be carbon neutral by 2050.  This lecture will be presented by Dr Artur Runge-Metzger, Director within DG Climate Action of the European Commission, a position he has held since January 2016.

This lecture supports the National Dialogue on Climate Action which is a Government of Ireland initiative funded by the Department of Communications, Climate Action & Environment and is hosted by the EPA.

The main objective of the new EU Commissions President Ursula von der Leyen is to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050.  This will require a major transformation and modernisation of the European economy and society within the next three decades to ensure nobody is left behind.  Dr Runge-Metzger will present details of the first set of approximately fifty major regulator and supporting initiatives which will begin this process, covering a broad array of EU policies in the fields of climate, energy, industry, mobility, agriculture/forestry, environment, sustaniable finance, investments, taxation and trade.

Dr Runge-Metzger is a Director at the DG Climte Action in the EU covering developing domestic and international climate strategies; overseeing the governance of EU climate action; regulating greenhouse gas emissoin from non-ETS sectors; and, supporting innovation and modernisation in the EUs energy and industrial sectors.

For twelve years Dr Runge-Metzger led on climate strategy and international climate negotiations including the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015.  He has held various Commission assignments in Sarajevo, Brussels and Harare.  He holds a doctoral degree in agricultural economics from the University of Gottingen.
