The EPA was informed on the 18th January via our emergency line of a serious fire ongoing at the Neiphin Trading site at Kerdiffstown, County Kildare. The fire services are in attendance and EPA inspectors have visited the scene over a number of days.
The fire started in a mixed-waste stockpile at the site and is classified as a below-surface fire. Following our initial assessment, EPA inspectors conducted air quality monitoring on Friday 21st January and again on Saturday 22nd January, at several locations both on and surrounding the site. Monitoring indicated that emissions from the fire are such that they are causing a localised environmental impact. The results of the monitoring are being provided to Kildare Fire Service and the Health Service Executive as they become available.
Inspectors from the EPA met with Kildare County Council Fire Service this morning, 24th January, to plan for the ongoing emergency response to the fire. The Fire Service and the EPA are continuing to assess the fire. It is not currently known when the fire will be extinguished.
This notice will be updated as information becomes available.
