On the 30th January 2006 at Cork District Court, ADM Ringaskiddy pleaded guilty to a charge brought by the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to an offence under Sections 8 and 84(2) of the Environmental Protection Agency Acts 1992 and 2003 for a breach of its IPC Licence (Reg. No. 53).
EPA Opens First EU Auction for Emissions Trading - Jan 27 2006, 9:34 AM
The EPA has launched the first EU Auction for Greenhouse Gas Allowances under the Emissions Trading Scheme today. The Auction is open to anyone with a registry account listed on the Community Transaction Log, as operated by the European Commission. The auction provides interested parties with an accessible way to purchase allowances from a Government source.

Air quality was generally good throughout the country in 2004. Recorded concentrations of the pollutants of most concern, particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were lower than in 2003. However, meeting stricter air quality standards in future years is not guaranteed, particularly in urban centres subject to heavy traffic.

The Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed its earlier decision to refuse permission to Roadstone Dublin Limited to construct an engineered landfill for the disposal of waste at its site in Blessington, Co Wicklow. Cork was concluded. Judge O’Leary found the case proven but in the circumstances applied the Probation Act and awarded costs to the EPA totalling €20,000.

The EPA today unveiled details of a confidential telephone service designed to encourage reporting of illegal dumping of waste or of abandoned illegal dumps. On 27th April 2006, the EPA advised that animals, including farm animals such as cattle and sheep, should not be allowed direct access to affected stretches of the Drish River (also known as the Black River) and the Rossestown River, as a precautionary measure. The EPA, in consultation with other relevant authorities, advises that as of 24th October 2006, the affected rivers are safe for animal access, notwithstanding farmers’ obligations under the Department of Agriculture and Food’s ‘Good Farming Practice’ guidance document. Testing of the river water indicates that it continues to be unpolluted.

Suspected Contamination of soil at South Park, Claddagh, Galway - Dec 13 2006, 4:14 PM
The EPA became aware of suspected high levels of metals in soil at South Park, Claddagh, Galway in June 2006. At that time the EPA advised Galway City Council on the scope of investigative work that was required to be done and requested Galway City Council to verify the initial result of soil analysis. The Council was also advised to undertake immediate works to cover exposed bare areas to avoid any potential risk to the environment or human health.
