ENVision – environmental maps at your fingertips

Date released: Sep 03 2007

Mr. John Gormley, TD, Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government, today launched a major new enhancement on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website.  Entitled ENVision – environmental maps at your fingertips, the online viewer allows people to access environmental information about their locality, or any region in Ireland.

ENVision is an interactive map viewer – similar to sites like Google Earth – with an Irish environmental focus.  It allows easier public access to environmental data that has been gathered by the EPA.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Mary Kelly, Director General, EPA, said “ENVision places environmental data where it belongs, in a local setting, and so acts as a window to the environment.  This new online viewer is the culmination of extensive work by EPA staff on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and layers of underlying data, to provide the public with a ‘what’s in my backyard?’ view of EPA data.”

“The launch of the ENVision online viewer shows that the EPA takes its role as an environmental data provider very seriously.  We are committed to putting measures in place to make it easier for people to access and find any environmental data they need,” she continued.

ENVision can be used to find EPA information on, for example:

-         Air quality

-         Water quality such as river water quality, lake water quality and bathing water quality

-         Industrial or waste facilities currently licensed by the EPA.  This section has been designed to link to the range of data about EPA licensed facilities already available on the EPA website.

ENVision is also home to some more technical “specialist” data such as soil and subsoils maps completed by Teagasc and the European Environment Agency and landcover data for Ireland. This will have particular relevance to environmental engineers and environmental researchers, making it easier to access the data required.

ENVision will continue to expand and further EPA information, for example enforcement data, will be added as it becomes technically possible to do so.
