Monday 9th of January 2012 saw the arrival on-site of a number of drilling rigs to undertake Phase I of the site investigation programme that will allow the EPA to gather further data on the site and contribute to the planning of the remediation.

The EPA today published greenhouse gas emissions projections for the period 2011 to 2020. The figures show the projected trends for greenhouse gases and give a picture of Ireland’s ability to meet EU and international targets with respect to greenhouse gas emissions.

Provisional greenhouse gas emissions figures released today by the EPA include trends from 1990 and show Ireland’s status in meeting our obligations set under the Kyoto Protocol. Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 4.12 million tonnes (6.7%) in 2011 to 57.34 million tonnes.

‘VOICE – Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment’, ‘Stop Food Waste’; ‘Bia Foodbank’ and ‘Food Glorious Food’ officially launched ‘Feeding the 5,000’ at the Church, St Mary’s Street, Dublin 1. The launch revealed the menu for the ‘Feeding the 5,000’ event which will attempt to feed 5,000 in Wolfe Tone Park on Saturday, 24th November, during European Week for Waste Reduction, with a main course made entirely out of fresh misshapen vegetables that would otherwise go to waste.

New campaign urges consumers to check the dates and cut food waste - Nov 19 2012, 12:26 PM
New research¹ by safefood for their “Cut Food Waste” campaign has revealed that 33% of consumers believe ‘best before’ and ‘use by’ dates on food labels means the same thing. The research also revealed that 45% of consumers know there’s a difference between the two but are unsure what that is.

The quality of drinking water in Ireland continued to improve in 2011 according to a new report released today by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA’s Drinking Water Report for 2011 is based on results from 250,000 monitoring tests; it shows that public water supplies serving more than 80% of the population have improved year-on-year since the EPA created a Remedial Action List over four years ago. There were 339 public water supplies needing remedial action on the list when it was created four years ago, now there are 183. Remedial works in a further 90 will be complete by year end.

Kerdiffstown Community Update number 12 - Dec 10 2012, 11:59 AM
In early October the EPA completed the drilling programme to progress characterisation of Kerdiffstown Landfill, and identify the type and quantity of waste that exists in every section of the site. Numerous samples have been taken and analysed and the results will be used for remediation planning purposes.

DPP prosecutes Cavan County Council and Oxigen Environmental Limited on indictment for odour nuisance - Dec 03 2012, 3:49 PM
At Cavan Circuit Court on 30 November the Director of Public Prosecutions prosecuted Oxigen Environmental Limited and Cavan County Council for breaching a condition of an EPA waste licence between 14 February 2007 and 14 February 2009 contrary to section 39 of the Waste Management Act. The prosecution was based on a file prepared by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Strategic Environmental Assessment- A Review of its Effectiveness in Ireland - Dec 14 2012, 11:00 AM
A Review of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) process in Ireland, commissioned by the EPA, has found that it has proven to be a vital tool for environmental protection. SEA is the process by which environmental considerations are integrated into Plans and Programmes across a broad range of sectors including energy, fisheries, industry, telecommunications, water and land use.
