RPII urges householders to test for cancer causing radon gas - Mar 03 2008, 11:26 AM
The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) has today urged householders to test their homes for the cancer causing radioactive gas radon. The RPII estimate that there are approximately 91,000 homes in Ireland with high levels of radon gas and so far only 4,000 approx. of them have been identified. This follows detection of very high levels of radon gas in a house near Ballyporeen in Co Tipperary.

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) has announced today that it has found a house in County Waterford with extremely high concentrations of radon gas. The house had radon levels which were nearly 50 times above the acceptable level.

The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) has announced today that it has found a house in north Kerry with extremely high concentrations of radon gas. The house had radon levels which were nearly 26 times above the acceptable level. The RPII believes it is very likely that there are more houses in the area with similarly high radon levels.

The most recent estimate of the radiation dose received by the Irish population shows a 9 per cent increase over previous estimates. This is according to a report “Radiation Doses Received by the Irish Population” published today by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII). The report details results of a three-year baseline study of the various sources of ionising radiation to which the Irish population is exposed.

Radon contributes more than half the radiation dose received by Irish people - Dec 15 2008, 11:27 AM
RPII publish annual report for 2007. Radon gas accounts for 56 per cent of the average annual radiation dose received by Irish people, and greatly exceeds the dose due to either medical exposure at 13.7 per cent or artificial sources of radiation (including discharges from Sellafield) of 0.4 per cent., according to the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII).
