Land use, soils and transport

Research is needed to establish baseline information about soils and changing land-use practices in Ireland and also ensure that proposed investments in transport infrastructure do not negatively impact on the surrounding environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency, under the Environmental Research, Technological Development and Innovation (ERTDI) Programme 2000-2006 has provided funding for a range of projects in the area of soils, land use and transport including

  • Establishing a national soils database
  • Work on carbon cycling and sequestration in soils
  • Land use planning
  • Impacts of transport on the environment

Within the last ten years, the Environmental Protection Agency has begun a consolidated research programme into various aspects of Ireland’s soil resource. As well as the recently completed EPA-funded Subsoils Mapping project, to-date, 21 projects related to soil research have been funded by the ERTDI programme, which corresponds to a total cost of € 4.98m (total EPA costs of € 4.35m).

The EPA Science, Technology, Research & Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) Programme 2007-2013 will aim at addressing the following issues:

  • Meeting the implementation requirements of the future Soil Framework Directive
  • Identification and assessment of pressures on the extent of soil
  • Pressures on soil diversity
  • Pressures on soil quality
  • Soil Research Platform
