Waste: a priority issue

This research area will contribute to more effective waste and resource management in Ireland and seek to address the environmental impacts of waste generation and management by taking into consideration the whole life cycle of resources. The Chemicals sub-theme will focus on developing and validating new approaches, methods and models for the risk assessment of chemicals and alternative testing strategies.

The issue of Waste management is one of the key challenges facing Ireland as identified in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Ireland's Environment 2004 and Environment in Focus 2006. The EPA 2020 vision document indicated that the overall goal is a more efficient use of resources (water, energy and materials). Waste will be prevented and minimised, with the balance safely collected, recycled or recovered. Final disposal will be completed in a way that does not harm the environment

The EPA with its Science, Technology, Research & Innovation for the Environment (STRIVE) Programme 2007-2013, will aim at addressing the following issues:

  • Waste Prevention and Minimisation
  • Waste Technologies:
    • Waste Recovery - methods, processes, initiatives and opportunities
    • Other areas of waste management (including disposal and residual waste management)
  • Resource Management
  • Market, Social and Management aspects of waste
  • Market & outlet development for waste derived resources
  • Society & behavioural aspects of waste management
  • Management tools, economics & the cost of waste management
  • Impact of waste management processes and facilities
  • Risk Assessment of Chemicals and Alternative Strategies for Testing
