A number of Producer Responsibility Initiatives have been assigned to the Environmental Protection Agency for enforcement. The essence of producer responsbility lies in the Polluter Pays Principle, making sure that the producer is responsible for the items at end of life, when they become waste. This responsibility has been given a legal basis in Ireland and is being enforced by the EPA.
The producer responsibility initiatives being enforced by the EPA include waste electrical and electronical equipment (WEEE), waste batteries and accumulators and restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS).
