Protecting the environment can be a complex task for both the private and public sectors.
The Environmental Protection Agency is committed to promoting environmentally sound practices, and publishes reports and documents providing guidance and advice on a range of issues, from licence applications to implementing technical standards.
We promote and fund research to establish best available environmental techniques, and make recommendations based on these findings. Our primary focus is on preventative rather than "end-of-pipe" measures.
The promotion of Strategic Environmental Assessment will identify and evaluate impacts on the environment and will allow plan and programme makers (nationally and locally) to mitigate the effects of those impacts.
Additionally, use of Environmental Impact Assessments reduces the potential ill-effects of development projects on the environment.
We have developed guidance and advice notes on the best practice in Environmental Impact Assessment. Most of these documents are free, and you can find them in our Downloads centre.
