Training & Qualifications

All persons handling ozone depleting substances must hold the relevant minimum qualifications, which are outlined below. This is a European requirement under Article 22 of Regulation 1005/2009 and is for the purpose of ensuring that ozone depleting substances are handled in such a way during recovery, recycling, reclamation and destruction so that leakages and emissions do not occur.

In Ireland, the minimum qualifications have been defined as follows:

  • Stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump sector - City & Guilds Certificate in Handling Refrigerants Scheme 2078, to be upgraded to City and Guilds Level 2 Award in F-gas and ODS Regulations (2079) or FETAC Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate Handling F-gas Refrigerants (5S0108)
  • Mobile air conditioning sector - FETAC Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate Handling F-gas Mobile Air Conditioning Systems (5S0109)
  • Fire protection sector - Fire Industry Association Competence Certificate Course Class 1 or FETAC Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate Handling F-gas Fire Extinguishants (5S0110)
  • Pest control sector - fumigation using methyl bromide - British Pest Control Association Certificate of Proficiency for Fumigation Operators (in a relevant specialist module or relevant specialist modules)
