EPA Prosecutes John Ronan & Sons

On the 9th May 2006 at Clonmel District Court, Co Tipperary, The Environmental Protection Agency took a prosecution against John Ronan & Sons, Dudley’s Mills, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary in relation to an offence under Sections 8 & 84(2) of the Environmental Protection Agency Acts, 1992 and 2003 for a breach of their IPC Licence (Reg. No. 225).

The prosecution related to the use of their facility to dispose of or recover waste in a manner other than specified in the IPC licence, without prior notice to and prior written agreement of the Agency.

On hearing details of the offence from an EPA inspector, Judge Finn imposed fines totalling €2,000 and the EPA’s costs of €5,442 were also awarded.

John Ronan & Sons were granted an IPC licence (Reg. No. 225) in January 2002 for the fellmongering of hides and the tanning of leather in installations where the capacity exceeds 100 skins per day. The tannery has since ceased operation. The facility is situated 1.5 km southeast of Clonmel town on the banks of the river Suir.

This prosecution was taken following a site visit by an inspector of the Environmental Protection Agency on 14th October 2005. The EPA previously prosecuted John Ronan & Sons in 2003 for non compliance with it’s IPC licence.
