EPA Prosecutes Ashbourne Meats Roscrea

On the 27th July 2006 at Roscrea District Court, the Environmental Protection Agency took a prosecution against Ashbourne Meats Roscrea in relation to an offence under Sections 8 and 84(2) of the Environmental Protection Agency Acts 1992 and 2003 for a breach of its IPC Licence (Reg. No. 194, P0194-01).

The prosecution related to the inappropriate storage of sludge and paunch on a field at Currantanty, Shinrone, Co. Offaly.

Breach of this condition has the potential to cause contamination of surface and ground waters.

On hearing details of the offence from an EPA inspector, Judge Mary Martin imposed a fine of €1,500 and the EPA’s costs of €5,400 were also awarded.

Ashbourne Meats was granted an IPC licence (Reg.No.194) on 14 April 2000 for a class 7.4 activity - the slaughter of animals in installations where the daily capacity exceeds 1,500 units.

The facility is located in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary.

This prosecution was taken following a site inspection carried out by the Office of Environmental Enforcement on 15th November 2005 carried out on foot of a complaint from Offaly County Council.
