EPA Prosecutes Galway County Council
On the 23rd April 2008 at Loughrea District Court, The Environmental Protection Agency took a prosecution against Galway County Council in relation to an offence under Regulation 10 (4)(a) of the European Communities (Drinking Water)(No.2) Regulations (S.I. 278/2007).
The Council pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to comply with a direction issued to it by the EPA on 31st August 2007 requiring it to install a continuous chlorine residual monitor and alarm at the Craughwell Water Treatment Plant within two months of the date of the said direction.
On hearing details of the offence, Judge Eamon O’Brien imposed a fine of €4,000 and EPA costs of €5,500 were also awarded.
This prosecution was taken following a site audit carried out on 23rd November 2007 by an inspector from the Office of Environmental Enforcement.
