EPA Prosecutes Mayo County Council

On the 1st February 2012 at Castlebar District Court, the Environmental Protection Agency (“the Agency”) took a prosecution against Mayo County Council (“the Council”) in relation to an offence under Regulation 10(4) (c) (ii) of the European Communities (Drinking Water) (No. 2) Regulations (S.I. 278/2007) and Regulation (12) of the said Regulations.

The Council pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to comply with a direction issued to it by the Agency on 21st April 2009 requiring it to prepare an action programme to ensure compliance with the trihalomethanes parametric value in relation to Lough Mask Regional Public Water Supply by 31st May 2011.
 
On hearing details of the offence, Judge Mary Devins imposed a fine of €750 on the Council and Agency costs of €2,350 were agreed.

This prosecution was taken following a site audit carried out by an inspector from the Office of Environmental Enforcement.
