European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Centralised Procedure

Since 18th April 2004, Genetically Modified Food and Feed applications are regulated in the European Community under Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003. This legislation provides for a single Community procedure for the authorisation of Genetically Modified products or products derived from Genetically Modified organisms.

The Regulation is based on the ‘one door-one key’ principle, for example, it is possible for an applicant to file a single application under the above legislation for: · an authorisation for the deliberate release of a GMO into the environment, under the criteria laid down in Directive 2001/18/EC (Deliberate release into the environment) and · an authorisation for use of a GMO in food and/or feed under the criteria laid down in Regulation 1829/2003 (Food and Feed).
