The above index is for overall Air Quality in Zone D and not just at this station. The index is calculated based on the latest available measurements of ozone, nitrogen dioxide, PM10 and sulphur dioxide in Zone D.

The Mace Head site is located at the Mace Head atmospheric Research Station operated by NUI, Galway, near Carna on the west coast. The measurements are made as part of the UK rural ozone network and which is funded by the UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Mace Head is a Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) site. The definitive records for 2004 ozone at Mace Head are available from the GAW database.

Monitoring is done using a continuous monitor for ozone. The latest results can be viewed through the link below. This work is ongoing.

Total gaseous mercury is also monitored at Mace Head by GKSS, Germany, funded by the EPA as part of a long term measurement study. Data is available to download via the Air Quality Archive.
