Reducing hazardous waste - the Hazred project

HAZRED was a three-year EU-Life funded partnership project, which aimed to reduce hazardous waste generation within small businesses in selected industrial sectors.  The project was funded by the EU Life Environment Programme and ran from December 2004 until November 2007.

HAZRED project partners included the Environmental Protection Agency in Ireland, the Environment Agency in England, the Welsh Assembly Government the Scottish EPA, SafetyKleen, Envirowise and the Waste Recycling Group.

Aims

The aims of the HAZRED project were to:

  • demonstrate the benefits of a sector based approach to hazardous waste reduction and
  • to demonstrate the application of reduction plans to achieve targeted reductions in hazardous waste

The project intended to recruit about 20 Irish and UK companies from each of six selected industrial sectors as participants in the project.  The six sectors were chosen based on the number of SME companies within each sector and the corresponding amount of hazardous waste that is generated by the sectors.  The siz HAZRED sectors were:

  • Treatment and coating of metals
  • Maintenance and repair of motor vehicles
  • Manufacture of speciality organic chemicals
  • Photographic processing
  • General Construction/Building
  • Manufacture of Equipment and Machinery

Hazardous waste reduction plans were also developed for each sector.  These include waste management best practice, methods of hazardous waste segregation and management, voluntary targets for reduction and other useful advice.

Benefits

Participants in the HAZRED project gained some of the following benefits:

  • Free specialist on site waste management advice from a HAZRED advisor
  • Improved hazardous waste management practice and knowledge
  • Reduction in hazardous waste generation
  • Reduction in costs associated with hazardous waste management

Summary final reports and benefits from the project can now be downloaded on the Environment Agency website.  If you have any general queries in relation to this project, please contact David Dodd at the contact details below.
