Waste Management

Waste management policy is set by the Government and is detailed in a set of three policy documents produced since 1998

  • Changing Our Ways
  • Delivering Change
  • Taking Stock & Moving Forward

Local authorities are responsible for preparing and implementing Regional Waste Management Plans.  The Environmental Protection Agency is responsible for preparing a National Hazardous Waste Management Plan.  The first such Plan was published in 2001, and is now under review.

The export and import of waste from and into Ireland is controlled by an EU Regulation (259/93).  Local authorities are responsible for regulating the export of controlled waste from the Republic of Ireland, and the EPA is currently responsible for regulating the import of waste into the State.  The Regulation has been replaced at EU level (Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006 and will come in to force in Ireland on 12 July 2007.
