New EPA Directors Appointed by Government

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the appointment, by government, of Mr Micheál Ó Cinnéide as Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the reappointment of Mr Larry Stapleton as Director for a second term. Dr Mary Kelly, Director General of the EPA, today welcomed the appointments, which are full-time executive appointments with a term of office of five years.

Micheál Ó Cinnéide graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway with a BA Honours degree in German and Sociology and received an MBA (High Distinction) from Harvard Business School in 1985.  He has been Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services with the Marine Institute since 1999, providing analytical services and policy advice to the Irish Government, EU Commission, State Agencies and the seafood industry.

He previously worked with the Southern Regional Fisheries Board with responsibility for fisheries enforcement, development and environmental protection.  Prior to this he worked for the Department of the Marine as Special Adviser to the Minister of State.

Micheál has also worked with the Irish Seafood Producers Group, as an Associate Fellow at Harvard Business School, as First Secretary in the Embassy of Ireland and was Vice Consul in the Consulate General of Ireland in the USA.

Mr Larry Stapleton has been Director of the EPA’s Office of Environmental Assessment since 2003 with overall responsibility for monitoring and research and for reporting on the state of the environment through the use of key environmental indicators. Larry joined the EPA from the Environmental Research Unit and was appointed as Programme Manager in 1993.  His responsibilities have included the production of the EPA’s first State of the Environment Report as well as management of the EPA laboratories and hydrometric programme. He also established the National Focal Point in Ireland for the European Environment Agency.  Larry is a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Cork (BE, M. Eng.Sc., C. Eng, F.I.E.I.) and is a native of Sligo.
