Bronwyn Hayward is a Professor in Political Science and International Relations, at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, where she is Associate Dean of Research (Arts) and Director of Hei Puāwaitanga: the Sustainability, Citizenship and Civic Imagination Research Group. She has served in a variety of roles in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (as a member of the Synthesis Report core writing team (2023), Co-ordinating Lead Author of the Cities and Infrastructure chapter of the Impact Adaptation and Vulnerability Report (2022) and as a lead author of the Special Report on 1.5 Degrees (2018). Professor Hayward leads a 7-nation study funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council with the University of Surrey’s Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity identifying sustainable, low carbon ways to support children and youth wellbeing in cities. She also co-leads a New Zealand Deep South National Science challenge supporting Indigenous Māori and Pacific youth leadership in climate change. For her contributions to youth, sustainability and climate change she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2021. She was also awarded the Supreme New Zealand Women of Influence national media/Westpac award in 2022 and was awarded a Kiwibank Local Hero award in 2018. She is a Fellow of the New Zealand Royal Society and a co-coordinator of Adaptation Futures 2025, the United Nations World Adaptation Science Programme biennial event which will be held online and in-person in Christchurch New Zealand in October 2025.
