Air Quality in Ireland 2025

Air quality in Ireland is generally good, meeting air quality limits for 2025 and with pollutants decreasing over the last 20 years. When air pollution occurs, it causes significant health impacts. Despite meeting EU air quality limits, there are around 1,500 premature deaths a year linked to air pollution. Local authorities play a vital role in improving air quality through the enforcement of solid fuel regulations, promoting home retrofitting, promotion of active travel, and public awareness initiatives.

The EPA is recruiting a Scientific Officer II (Level 4) Analytical Chemist. An immediate vacancy exists in the EPA Kilkenny Water Laboratory, which carries out analysis of environmental samples using a range of modern analytical techniques and instrumentation. This role will involve managing and implementing monitoring programmes for the measurement of a range of pollutants, including trace level contaminants, in Irish waters for the purpose of providing evidence of water quality status.

Scientific Officer I (Level 3) Emissions Analyst

The successful candidate will fulfil the role of Scientific Officer I (Level 3) Emissions Analyst. The EPA is recruiting an experienced data analyst to join the Emissions Statistics team in the EPA’s Climate Change Programme. The person appointed will play an integral role in the production of Ireland’s Quarterly Greenhouse Gas Emissions Indicators, and National Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollutant Inventories and Projections. The person will also be assigned a management role and will be a valued member of team of analytical and technical experts from science, engineering, statistics and data analysis or similar technical backgrounds.
