An Indicators Report, June 2026

This report looks at how Ireland’s water quality has changed in 2025, using the latest monitoring data for rivers, lakes, groundwater, estuaries and coastal waters. Overall, the report shows no major change in water quality in 2025. Nutrient levels remain too high in a large proportion of water bodies. Levels fluctuate year on year but are not improving overall over the long term. The biological health of our rivers and lakes has shown little change with slightly more than half (54%) in good or better biological quality.

Water Quality 2019-2024 Summary Report

This report provides summary information on the status of our rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal waters (known collectively as surface waters) and groundwaters. It is based on information collected over a 6-year period from 2019 to 2024 under Ireland’s national water quality monitoring programme from over 4,000 surface water bodies and 514 groundwater bodies. It highlights changes in the condition of these waters, identifies the main problems causing water quality issues and sets out what actions need to be taken to protect this important national resource.
