Project Abstract
Initial studies have shown that flexible electrification using e-boilers can deliver over 50% carbon reduction on industrial sites while also reducing operation costs. Incorporating thermal energy storage will increase decarbonisation further, helping to reduce wastage of renewable electricity. This study will investigate the potential of e-boilers and thermal storage to deliver several Climate Action Plan 2024 relevant targets outlined below. Using data analysis typical high-heat-load manufacturing plants will be completed to determine the improvement in carbon emissions and energy costs achieved by eboiler and thermal storage technologies. Results from this test case will be scaled up to consider the potential national impact in terms of achieving reduced carbon emissions and increased renewables share, and recommendations for policy changes will be developed based on the distribution of heating loads and future plans for renewable generation capacity. The project has potential to deliver CAP 2024 hybrid delivery of industrial heat, maximise the use of existing grid assets, deliver the 20% target of flexible demand and contribute to delivering 80% renewable electricity by 2030. It can reduce energy costs to industry while also lowering costs for all Irish citizens.
