Project Abstract
CARBFORVAL is a 12-month project that aims to investigate the carbon footprint of Irish forest products used in construction, assessing the full lifecycle from the forest to the mill, from the mill to the construction site, and through the entire building lifecycle to the end of its service life and deconstruction or reuse. This will build upon existing research data and published environmental data for forest products, including Environmental Product Declarations for Sitka spruce timber products, collating their associated lifecycle inventory data, and linking the full lifecycle for the first time. This will initially follow an attributional lifecycle assessment approach. This will enable the identification of lifecycle stages in the wood value chain where further carbon emissions reductions may be possible. A summary report and a policy brief will be produced to provide policymakers with an understanding of the entire lifecycle of Irish-grown timber products, promoting their use in the built environment in place of materials such as concrete and steel. A non-technical summary sheet will also be produced for wider dissemination of the project findings among relevant stakeholders in the forest and construction sectors.
