Project Abstract

The CRISIS project represents the first of its kind; gold-standard laboratory-confirmed communicable disease and hospital-level morbidity/mortality datasets will be employed, in concurrence with environmental and climactic driver datasets to identify, quantify and forecast the overall human health impacts of extreme weather events (EWEs) and climate change in the ROI. Modelling will be undertaken at the smallest possible resolution, thus elucidating spatiotemporal health impact mechanisms at a sub-national level. No Irish study to date has sought to clarify the effects of climate on individual and societal wellbeing or accurately quantify the fiscal costs of climate change to the Irish taxpayer (lost productivity, healthcare). CRISIS will employ expertise in climate science, behavioural science, environmental economics, alongside existing expertise within current EPA-funded project teams, to break new ground in integrating the epidemiological, social and financial components of climate change and EWEs, thus permitting an holistic overview of climate change issues, their impacts, and appropriate adaptation, intervention and communication strategies. Model outcomes will lead to development of an Irish Health Atlas for visual delineation of risk prone regions and periods, thus empowering the Irish population to protect themselves and their communities from climate impacts, future-proofing the health and wellbeing of current and future generations.
