Project Abstract

Light pollution is a clear form of energy wastage, indicating light which is neither required nor necessary and sometimes ending up far from its intended useful location. This project will create the first total energy budget of artificial light sources to the wider environment through a combination of an innovative GIS-based techniques, coupled with high resolution digital elevation model and detailed photometry of the light sources. The goal is to model an entire citys light emissions at high spatial resolution, relaxing simplifications such as regular streets and buildings, to deal with real-world cases of old cities with much more irregular structures and lighting types and understanding the contributions of public, commercial and residential emissions.
