Project Abstract

EU strategies Farm to Fork and Biodiversity challenge current agricultural practices. The vision calls to reduce agricultural land by 30%, lower nitrogen fertilizer application by 50% and stricter control of agrochemicals. The ban of neonicotinoid insecticides resulted in re-emergence of BYDV viruses that are now a major threat to cereal grain production. The increased prices of natural gas drive upward costs of nitrogen fertilizers, demanding cereal crops with highest nitrogen use efficiency. Acceleration and enforcement of classic breeding is necessary. The project will achieve that goal by using New Breeding Techniques.
