Project Abstract

In the time frame of the FERTIGO project, the overall objective is to investigate the potential of P. lanceolata when used in two distinct situations: Situation 1: Investigation of the potential of P. lanceolata used as a companion plant sown under a spring crop such as maize, with the aim to stabilize N in soil during spring time, thanks to the root-exudated BNI compounds of plantain. See Figure 2. Situation 2: Investigation of the potential of P. lanceolata used as part of the plant composition of temporary grasslands, with the aim to 1) stabilize N pools during the ley phase and 2) create a slow nitrifying and denitrifying environment after ley termination and incorporation, thanks to the root-exudates BNI compounds of plantain and BNI accumulation in tissue of plantain. The overall aim of WP 3 (Teagasc and UCD led) is to evaluate the use of plantain for N mitigation in spring barley production via 1. Plantain containing temporary grasslands; 2. Plantain and legume containing cover crops mixtures.
