Project Abstract

There are two key objectives of the CCFLUX project: (i) to provide the EPA with a balance sheet detailing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by sources and removal by sinks for selected major Irish land-use categories and (ii) to furnish policy makers with the process knowledge required to make rationally based recommendations for reducing national GHG emissions. The land-cover types over which GHG flux measurements are made are arable farmland grassland and forest. The funding for the arable farmland flux measurements comes from the EPA while support for the grassland flux measurements is from EU FP5 and that for the forest flux measurements is from COFORD. The EU FP5 funded i'Greengrassi project terminated in December 2004. As of 1 January 2004 additional funding for the arable farmland site has come from the FP6 programme CarboEurope integrated project. To reach the stated objectives the Workplan consists of the following four Work Packages forming a linear sequence of interrelated tasks each with deliverables and milestones:WP1. Project planning site selection and development of methods.WP2. Flux measurements of CO2 and N2O.WP3. Ecosystem process studies.WP4. GHG flux modelling. Most work to date has been under WPs 1 2 and 3. We have established a study site for continuous flux measurements over arable soils at Oak Park Research Centre Carlow. The site establishment has been in close collaboration with Teagasc staff at Carlow. The year 2003 was the first full year of flux measurements and these measurements continued throughout 2004 and into 2005.
