Project Abstract

The proposed research aims to identify draft adaptation indicator sets that can assess levels of local and sectoral preparedness for climate change, communicate this information to relevant stakeholders, facilitate informed adjustment of adaptation actions and inform national and international reporting requirements on adaptation to climate change. The work will entail a state of the art review of international best practice in order to ascertain criteria and constraints relevant to adaptation indicator development in Ireland. A compliance framework will be developed to ensure adaptation indicator identification observes best practice constraints applicable to Ireland and fulfils information requirements on adaptation progress and preparedness for national, local and sectoral levels. Draft adaptation indicators will be identified through application of the compliance framework. Relevance of existing mandated indicators will be cross-referenced against the compliance framework for inclusion into the Draft indicator sets where appropriate. The proposed draft indicators will be validated against a data and information gap analyses in order to make recommendations for data and information collection requirements and to propose transient and proxy indicators based on existing data and information that can provide information required in the short term.
