Project Abstract

There is a national requirement for real time in situ monitoring of atmospheric pollutants in urban environments and rural areas close to industrial complexes. Many current monitoring instruments are expensive, require elaborate set up and maintenance and do not allow the acquisition of in situ, real time data. This proposal will develop a low cost, portable, optical system for the in situ detection of multiple atmospheric gaseous pollutants harmful to human health, including oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. The basic principles of the system have been proven at DIT and the proposed research will produce a commercially viable field based prototype.
