Project Abstract

This research project will identify financially material climate-related risks and opportunities which will impact the private sector in Ireland, on a sector by sector basis. The project will use the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) assessment framework, which is increasingly seen as international best practice in this regard. Developed by industry for industry, the TCFD approach can be applied at a company and at a sectoral level. It categorises climate-related risks between physical risks and transition risks associated with moving to a low carbon economy, across policy, technology, market and reputational impacts. It also recognises the business opportunities associated with the low carbon transition across categories including resource efficiency, new products and services and new markets. Our research will first identify the Irish industry sectors that will be most impacted by climate adaptation. We will then prepare up to 10 sector-based climate adaptation �materiality assessments�, using the TCFD framework. At the same time, we will collate examples of adaptation responses and innovations in the relevant sectors. We will validate all of this information with Irish private sector businesses in order to generate evidence to inform policy, whilst simultaneously developing the climate resilience of these businesses.
