Project Abstract

Over the last three years I authored two reports , for the EPA which provide a benchmark for the status and requirements for climate observation systems in Ireland. Coordination and regular reviews are required in order to advance and document progress in implementation of the actions presented in these plans, especially in light of contracting resources. The difficulties encountered in accessing data observations for climate studies limit Ireland?s ability to participate fully in international climate related research activities. There is a need to scope, develop and establish an online climate data portal to facilitate access to all relevant observational metadata and data. A comprehensive analysis of status and trends of all the Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) across the atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial domains will be carried out. The utility of remotely sensed measurements to fill spatial and temporal gaps in in-situ measurements will be explored.
