Project Abstract

The Water Framework Directive demands that benthic invertebrates are used to assess the ecological status of lakes. Little is known, however, about the quantitative effects of anthropogenic pressures on lake littoral invertebrate assemblages. This proposal aims to address this problem by using existing data, targeted field monitoring and well-replicated field experiments to develop tools for assessing general anthropogenic pressure based on the spatiotemporal variability and composition of lake littoral communities.
