Project Abstract

While there is a general awareness of the potential environmental effects of fiscal instruments, the actual environmental costs of these are often not assessed. In contrast the revenue implications of fiscal instruments are usually identified in detailThe proposed research will first identify the potential for and nature of environmental impact for each fiscal instrument. This work will build on and update previous research by Barrett, Lawlor and Scott (1997). For a small selection of fiscal instruments the environmental impacts will be quantified in detail. This analysis will illustrate the role of the fiscal system in influencing environmental sustainability. See full proposal for details
