Project Abstract

This research seeks to develop cutting edge ensembles of river flow projections for a large sample (>90) of catchments that represent they range of Irish hydrological conditions. Projections will be derived from all available Global and Regional Climate Models that form the CMIP5 and CORDEX ensembles and an ensemble of hydrological models to characterise plausible ranges of change in mean, low flow and drought conditions in Ireland. Based on input from a wide range of stakeholders future changes in key hydrological metrics will be derived to inform robust decision making in the water sector. In addition, the CORDEX ensemble of regional climate models will be interrogated to assess future changes in drought risk across the island and to further understanding of how meteorological drought propagates into hydrological drought. All data generated by the project, together with summary information sheets for each catchment will provided through an online dashboard, the design of which will be tailored to meet user needs. The dashboard will also integrate existing work on trends in river flows from the Irish Hydrometric Reference Network and the Irish drought catalogue thus making key adaptation information available in one consolidated location.
