Project Abstract

Ambitious international efforts to move to a low-carbon and climate-resilient society will require substantial socio-technical transitions in energy, transport, food, land-use and other systems. Imagining 2050 will consolidate, the existing research capacity in Ireland in i) societal transitions; ii) climate mitigation; iii) climate adaptation; developing, iv) innovative communications and engagement methods in an integrated project. It will engage with civic society using innovative approaches; explore and co-develop future visions and pathways to a low carbon and climate resilient future. It will develop a recursive, iterative process combining mini-publics linking technical scenario analysis to envision and co-produce pathways. It will combine transitions research with the technical analysis in a multi- and trans-disciplinary manner. It will evolve through stakeholder engagements with climate thought leaders, civil society agencies and intermediaries, state agencies and policymakers. It will explore and evaluate a number of innovative communications methods to capture and visualise the process, visions and the scenarios. The outcomes of Imagining 2050 will directly inform the National Dialogue on Climate Action in terms of approaches and structures for engagement with society at different levels to build public support for climate action plans required over the coming years and decades.
