Project Abstract

It has been recently known that the addition of a small amount of clay (typically 5wt.%) into polymer provides considerable enhancement in mechanical and barrier properties. This work will extend clay studies into an environmentally fascinating area, i.e. plastics recycling. It will use pre-treated clays to enhance the toughness of recycled plastics and study toughening mechanisms of clay in polymers. The mobility of clay layers under external forces may help polymer nanocomposites resist fracture. This project will benefit plastics recycling industry by upgrading their products and other plastics industries by providing more choices of cheap raw materials.
