Project Abstract
Delta V Plus Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer for high precision measurement of the relative isotope abundances of 18O and 34S [and 2H] comprised of (i) a 90? stigmatic focusing electromagnet for all gas species with an extremely wide angular ion distribution using an effective magnetic deflection radius of 191 mm that allows unique cup configurations at higher masses, e.g. SO2 (m/z 64, 65, 66); (ii) multi-collector suitable for all standard applications but in particular CO (28, 29, 30) and SO2 (64, 65, 66) [and H2 (2,3)]; (iii) 50 V amplifiers with high ohmic resistors to provide high linear dynamic range. In this instance, high precision means an internal and external precision for 34S measurement of 0.01 and 0.10 ?, respectively.Such a facility does not exist in Ireland but is required to provide answers to questions concerning ecological, environmental, geological and climatic matters that cannot be answered sufficiently by traditional chemical analysis or analysis of carbon and nitrogen isotopes alone. The requested equipment will extend and compliment the capabilities of QUB?s existing multidisciplinary isotope facility (2H, 13C, 14C, 15N) and like existing isotope equipment will be accessible to researchers at QUB and other institutions across Ireland.
