Project Abstract

In Ireland grasslands are extensive covering 51.4% of the country. Recent legislative instruments (The Kyoto protocol, the Nitrates Directive and REPS ) implemented at global, European and national scales impinge on grassland agriculture. There are issues with monitoring compliance to these instruments because of the spatial extent of Irish grasslands. Remote sensing offers methodologies that can be used to monitor compliance with the above instruments. This research will focus on the development of a low cost remote sensing tool for reliable, rapid, spatially extensive quantification of clover, the presence of slurry applied to fields and habitats diversity.
