Project Abstract

An international review - WMO GAW ERC Review Report (Barrie and Puckett, 2006) - of GAW sites in Ireland found that Mace Head was of unique importance but lacked institutional operational support. The proposed approach to research issues identified in the specification document (Section 5.4) is summarised as follows: 7 of 15 1. Analysis of air pollutant data (such as PM mass, PM chemical composition, BC, number concentration) will be used to help quantify an assessment of hemispheric transport of pollutants. 2. Develop and support data collection and archival data systems for reporting to national (e.g. EPA) and international bodies (e.g. EMEP, WMO GAW). 3. Support of on-going research programmes and projects at Mace Head as agreed between the EPA and NUI Galway and of relevant upcoming programmes. 4. Enablement of new PM2.5 and new PM10 mass concentration measurements and of their chemical inorganic ion mass concentration at the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station as recommended by Barrie & Puckett, 2006. 5. Archival in a national (EPA) database of PM mass & PM chemical data & related data progress on which has been delayed due to lack of adequate resources to date. 6. Publish / contribute to peer-reviewed journals and Reports of work carried out at Mace Head
