Project Abstract

The development of environmental indicators for assessing demonstrating and predicting environmental impact of proposed plans has been carried out in order to enable practitioners to meet the requirements of the EU Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Directive (2001/42/EC) on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programmes on the environment. The SEA Directive was transposed into Irish law in July 2004 and hardly any research had been carried out on this subject prior to this time. The primary aims of this research were to; (a) develop a set of environmental indicators capable of demonstrating environmental impact of proposed plans and programmes (b) establish a methodology by which SEA practitioners could devise plan specific environmental indicators and (c) ensure high quality environmental indicators were established by providing selection criteria and a quality checklist for the chosen environmental indicators. This is the first research of its kind to be carried out in Ireland.
