Project Abstract

The overarching purpose of this research is the production of a high quality communication book on the soils of Ireland. The research aims to combine, collate and update existing knowledge on Irish soils. The historical contribution of previous researchers will be integrated with the latest advancements in soils research in Ireland. The final book will include five parts: 1) introduction to Irish soils, 2) the soilscapes of Ireland, 3) soils mapping and the Irish soil classification system, 4) soils functions and ecosystem services and 5) a soil resources section. Also, the pressures on the soil resource along with the potential solutions will be examined. Both mapping of soils and monitoring of soils will be researched. Individual sections will include contributions from experts in the area of soil-related research who will be invited to contribute where appropriate.
