Project Abstract

It is widely recognised that market development is a key element in the development of the composting industry. A key element in market development is the need for a quality standard for compost.Cri proposes to support the development of a draft Compost Quality Standard. The project proposes to develop a desktop draft standard in consultation with the composting sector (producers and users) and regulators. A Project Steering Committee will include representatives from the Market Development Group Department of Environment Heritage and Local Government Environmental Protection Agency Department of Agriculture and Food and Cri. It is proposed to conduct a desktop evaluation of compost quality results from Bord na Monais database of 300 sets of compost results. Contact will be made with other laboratories in Ireland to seek their permission to use their databases too. When the results are statically analysed and average compost values will be determined for green waste biowastes and other organic composts. This will be followed by a technical appraisal of published compost quality standards from different countries with consultation with organisations in Europe who have developed compost standards already. At the end of this process making reference to known quality of Irish composts a Draft Standard specification for compost in Ireland will be developed. Then there will be extensively consultation of the draft standard with all stakeholders including users producers and regulators through two workshops. After each workshop the draft standard will be amended to produce a final standard.A follow on project from this EPA funded project will be the trialling of the standard in composting facilities and the development of a Compost Quality Assurance Scheme.
